I have a dozen Smart Soil Moisture Sensors, mostl Gen 2 but also a few Gen1. All are connected through ZHA in a very rich network evironnement with multiple powered devices and colde antennas. Some sensors, 4 currently, stop sending data and drop from the network quite often. I thought it was zigbee connectivity but rencetly, I found out that when they drop off the network, pressing the reset has absolutely no effect. The blue pairing LED does not light up and the only was to have them back is to remove the battery for a few seconds to force a reboot. This is rather recent, all use the latest available firmware.
Batteries are OK too. The only recent change apart from the firmware is the weather which has started to become much warmer.
