Step changes in temperature

Using Home Assistant and a 3RTHS0224Z temperature humidity sensor, I noticed strange jumps of approximately 1F when the temperature is changing. This is very strange as there is noise on each of the steps with 0.1F resolution. I want to use these sensors to control my HVAC system and this behavior is undesirable. Has anyone else observed this? Is there a fix? I have jpg’s of a 1 day temperature plot form home assistant, and a 1 month histogram showing the issue, but I do not see a way to attach them.

You can configure the report requirements yourself, that is, adjust the configuration report settings values by yourself. I don’t know whether you are using ZHA or Z2M. ZHA please refer to https://community.home-assistant.io/t/report-configuration-of-a-sleepy-device-with-zha-toolkit/384617.

It’s relatively simple on Z2M. You can just directly find the Reporting menu and make the adjustments.

I have three of your sensors. I see some minor changes in temperature that are less than 1°F and then a 1 degree drop. All three show stair stepping. I bought one and saw the stepping, bought another to see if it would act any different which it did not. Those two are on Home Assistant using ZHA.

Decided to install a second zigbee coordinator to troubleshoot issues and I’m running z2m on that. Bought a third sensor and paired it to z2m and it shows the same stair step pattern.

I also have some sensors that built I use for reference that show gradual change in temperature which is what I expect to see.

In your location, can you set one up where the heat is turned down overnight and graph the results to see if you can see the stair stepping?

wess The sensor device has a reporting frequency set by default to report every 10 seconds if the value change exceeds 0.1. Due to this time interval, the data graph will inevitably appear as a step-like pattern rather than a continuous curve. Of course, by setting the reporting frequency to a sufficiently small value, the curve can approach a smoother trend. Is this what you are looking to achieve?

I have a similar problem. I have several 3RTHS0224Z temperature humidity sensors, two of which are in adjacent rooms in a currently unoccupied cabin. One of the sensors reports normally; the other sends frequent updates (often 2 per minute) with reporting changes of about 1°F, up and back down, while the temperature in the room is not changing. My hub is a Hubitat, which reports to my own logging/graphing platform.

I have been wondering whether the fluctuating sensor is defective, but seeing other reports of similar problems makes me wonder if there is something more subtle going on.

The bathroom temperature (blue line) is the one with the jitter; the Main Room (green line) reports normally.

Unfortunately, the sensor is at our cabin in the mountains, about 150 miles from here. I only get there a couple of times a year, so it’s difficult to test that.

I’ve just picked up one of these sensors (firmware 1.00.47) and I’m seeing the same behaviour.

I’ve configured the minimum reporting change to 0.3C but as others have reported, the data points from the device seem to move in _1C steps, with some jitter roughly around each 1C.

Here’s some data from a room after the heating was switched off on a cold evening -

lwfitzgerald The current version still has room for optimization in temperature sampling processing. We have already scheduled improvements to enhance its smoothness, and this issue will be addressed in the new version.

Last week I bought the temperature sensor with LCD on hopes it would honor the configured reporting interval… Tonight in the whole night I had FIVE temperature changes reported.
Are you going to update the FW to honor the reporting? Of I set 300 seconds, I have to receive a temperature report every 5 minutes, it can’t jump a whole degree farenheit in three hours. If not I’ll Return it.

I’ve just bought four 3RTHS0224Z sensors, all located at different places in my apartment, and they all display the same temperature stepping behavior as @lwfitzgerald and others have reported. Will the promised firmware update to fix this come soon, or will I have to return these to the store where I bought them due to them not working as specified?

I’m on a Home Assistant Green hub (with latest Home Assistant OS), ZBT-2 antenna and ZHA. All four of my sensors are on firmware version 0×0000002f (1.00.47).

Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. Our engineering team is still working on improving the graph now. It does require some time to find a balance between the battery life and the accuracy graph while the value is correct.
